The Azores
After a week at sea we have finally reached the Azores at noon on Saturday. They are group of nine volcanic islands. Although Portuguese, they are in the Atlantic Ocean over 850 miles from the mainland. We docked the ship at Ponta Delgada, which is located on São Miguel Island.
The tour we took was of Sete Cidades Crater Lake. We drove higher and higher up the mountain till we reached an elevation of 1900 feet, we could see the entire crater which was 8 miles in circumference. The view of the lakes below were magnificent. One was supposed to be blue reflecting the sky and the other was supposed to be green reflecting the setting within the crater walls; however, the clouds dampened the colors.
We then descended into the village of Sete Cidades, which lies right in the middle of the volcanic crater.
We ended the tour by leaving Ponta Delgada and heading toward the village of Faja de Baixo to visit a pineapple plantation. The is grown in greenhouses. We saw the different phases of the pineapples growing cycle.
We then returned to Ponta Delgada. The ship is leaving the port at 11:00 pm and we will be heading towards Spain.
I can't tell you how envious I am right now. I want to move to the Azores now.
