Cadiz, Spain
We arrived at Cadiz, Spain at about 8am this morning. Cadiz is a city with a lot of history. Founded in 1100 BC by the Phoenicians, Cádiz is the oldest inhabited city in Spain and one of the oldest in western Europe. It was occupied by different nations, including the Carthaginians, Visigoths, Romans and Muslims.
The Roman theatre (only partially excavated) was discovered in 1980. The theatre, which was likely built during the 1st century BC and was one of the largest ever built in the Roman Empire could house 10,000 spectators.
Christopher Columbus made his four trips across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain. Yet, on his second and forth voyage to the New World he set sail from Cádiz. It then became one of the most important ports in Spain and was the main port when dealing trade with America.
One of Cádiz's most famous landmarks is its cathedral. The construction of the Cathedral was started in 1722, but it took 116 years to finish the construction.
